The courtroom was silent as people took their seats. The Judge was already in his chair of course. The Defense and Prosecution stood behind their desks. The Defendant slowly and sorrowfully walked to his seat. The sound of a gavel smacking against hard wood could be heard. The Judge's voice was loud and prideful. "Court is now in session."
~Chapter 1: Turnabout Giraffe Part 1: The Beginning~
The Judge began the proceedings. "Is the Prosecution prepared?" He was looking at the woman in a green suit sitting at the Prosecution's desk. She had a calm aura. Her hair was blonde and wrapped around her neck like a snake. Her suit lacked a tie of any sort. Her face was straight, showing no emotion. "Yes your Honor." She replied with a calm voice. The Judge then turned his attention to the young man standing opposite her, at the Defense's desk. "Is the Defense prepared?" The young man was wearing typical black suit with a red tie. His hair was brown and spiked towards the front. His green eyes full on uncertainty. "Yes your Honor." He replied quietly.
The Judge then smacked his gavel once more, and spoke to the woman once more. "Would the Prosecution please give the summary of the current case?" "Of course your Honor." The woman pulled open a file. She then began to read it. "The victim is Ms. Sophia Mamal. She was killed via being crushed at the Giraffe exhibit at the Dalphida Zoo. Time of death of approximately eleven AM on March twelfth. The Defendant is Mr. Nathan Hobbs." "Very well. Now, you may call your first witness Ms... What was your name again? I apologize." Said the Judge. The woman's expression didn't change as she said "Vira Incarce, your Honor." "Ah. I shall remember that. Now, call your first witness." She then named her witness. "The Prosecution calls Mrs. Hark to the stand."
After all of the things beforehand, such as taking an oath, the woman took her place at the witness stand. "Witness, name and occupation please." Said Vira. The woman was a tad shaken up as she said, "Katherine Hark. School Teacher." "Witness, please testify about what you saw that day."
"I was taking my students on a field trip that day. We were about to visit the Giraffe exhibit when I saw something horrible... I saw a man running away from the exhibit. When I went in, there was a woman, crushed! I tried my best to keep the children from seeing it. The police arrived about five minutes after that."
"Mr. Bulwark, it is now time for your Cross-Examination." Said the Judge. "I'm so nervous. This is my first time in court after all..." Thought Jurist Bulwark.
"Perhaps I should take a peek at the Court Record. Thought Jurist. He opened the file and looked at its contents. There was the Autopsy Report, which was just read by the Prosecution. There was a picture of the crime scene, a close-up picture of the victim, (Who is covered in large footprints.) a video recording, (which is of the Giraffe Cages. It is cut off just before the moment it happens.) and the schedule of the Defendant. (He was supposed to be there at the time of the murder to clean the giraffe cages.) "Hm..." Mumbled Jurist. "How do you know that these footprints are the Defendants?" Said Jurist whilst his hand was holding on to his bangs. "What do you mean?" Asked Katherine. "I mean, she could have been trampled by giraffes. It was a giraffe cage after all." Said Jurist while twisting his hair. Silence filled the room... Vira looked up at Jurist. "Simple. The recording." "What about the recording?" Asked Jurist. "Play the tape for the court please." Said Vira in a somewhat demanding voice.
A television was brought in and the tape was inserted. The following scene played out: A woman is standing in front of the giraffe cages. A man comes by with a large shovel. He passes by the woman and heads into a building. Less than a minute later the camera shuts off. When the camera resumes the woman is on the ground, dead. The man then steps out of the building.
"Do you see now Mr. Bulwark? It seems obvious that he is the one with the best opportunity to commit the crime." Said Vira smugly. "I'm sorry, but there seems to be something wrong with this tape." Says Jurist. "And what might that be?" Asks Vira. "Well, for one thing, the guy doesn't leave the building until after she is killed..." "Nonsense! He obviously went back in there to turn the camera back on." Argued Vira. "Ob-Objection!" Said Jurist in a weak voice. "Why would he do that? That seems idiotic if you ask me." Vira seems to not be bothered by this. "Objection!" Shouted Vira. "Obviously it was to remove suspicion. He was to stay in the giraffe area until eleven. He arrived at ten-thirty." "Objection..." Said Jurist in a slightly less pathetic voice than last time. "Wasn't the murder at eleven? He would have had to leave right after he killed her. Wasting time to turn the camera back on would just make him more suspicious." "A very good point Mr. Bulwark." Said the Judge. "Can you explain this Ms. Incarce?" Vira began to think for a moment. Not long after that she replied with, "What if someone else turned off the camera?" Jurist began to stammer. "W-W-W... What?!" The spectators began to exchange theories. Eventually the Judge slammed his gavel. "Order! Order in the court! Do you have any evidence to support your claim Ms. Incarce?" "Hm... I had better not mess this up. I need to choose my words carefully..." Thought Vira.
"What to do... What if the man in that video wasn't... That's it! I'll be taking a big risk though..." Thought Vira. "The Prosecution is prepared to back up their claim." "Very well Ms. Incarce. Please do so." Said the Judge. "The answer lies in the video recording. Please play it once more." Said Vira in a somewhat demanding voice. The tape was played again. The man walks by the woman, and goes into the building. Just like before. The tape cuts off. Just like before. The man walks out of the building while the dead body lay there. Just like befo-- "Pause the tape!" A still of the man could be seen. Vira slams her first onto her desk. "How do you know this man is the same one as the man who first went into the building?" Inquired Vira. "That is a very good point Ms. Incarce. What does the Defense think of this?" Asked the Judge. Jurist seemed to be calm. "What was the point of that? Something tells me she didn't think her brilliant plan all the way through..."
"Wait... Even if it was a different man..." Began Jurist. He then smacked his palm against the desk and said, "How do we know that this new man wasn't the murderer?" The court began to chatter. The gavel was slammed. "Order! I think we need to ask our witness some more questions. Defense, you may carry on with your Cross-Examination." Said the Judge. "Here we go again." Thought Jurist. "Alright, I have two questions for you Mrs. Hark." "And what might they be?" Hark asked. "What time was it when you saw the man running away?" Asked Jurist. "I'd say it was about eleven on the dot." Said Hark. "And one more question. What did the man look like?" Asked Jurist in a slightly happy voice. "Well, I'd say he looked like the Defendant over there." Jurist's smile faded away quickly. "What the...?!" Thought Jurist. "But wait... Wasn't it a different man who we saw running away in the video?!" Shouted the Judge. "I can provide an answer." Said Vira. "Y-You can?!" Half asked half cried Jurist. "Naturally." Said Vira calmly.
"Would they believe this? I wonder..." Thought Vira as her face began to twist into a twisted smile that is twisted. "Let us review. The Defendant killed her at exactly eleven'o clock correct? For him to do this, he would have had to perform his normal duties, then hurry and turn off the camera. Afterwards, he would kill the woman, and make his get-away. If this witness saw him at exactly eleven. He would need an accomplice to turn on the camera. In the video, what was different about the man from before?" "Hm..." Said the Judge as he stroked his overly large beard. "He was wearing different clothes for one thing." "Exactly. To be specific, it's the jacket that is different. However, can we see the man's face in the video at all?" Inquired Vira. "Now that you mention it..." Began the Judge. "Oh no. I know where she's going with this!" Thought Jurist. Vira slammed her fist on her desk as she said, "The Defendant's accomplice obviously gave the Defendant his jacket as to further help disguise him!"
"I knew it. How do I argue against that? Wait, I've got an idea..." Thought Jurist. Jurist began to play with his hair as he said in a voice mimicking Vira's, "Can you provide evidence to support your claim?" After about a second's hesitation, Vira responded. "Yes." "She's bluffing! Keep on her Jurist..." Thought Jurist. "Well, where is this evidence?" "Why don't we ask the man who was with the Defendant at the crime scene?" Said Vira. "Y-Y-Y-Y-" Stammered Jurist. "Why yes, I do know who it is. I asked the owner of the zoo before this trial. He said that there was one more person on duty at that location." Said Vira. "Who is this person Ms. Incarce?" Asked the Judge. "None other than Dan Renalds. The security guard." Said Vira. "I have this case won." Thought Vira. "This looks bad. Then again, if my client is innocent I'm sure to find some contradictions in his testimony right?... Right...?" Thought Jurist. "The Court shall take a short recess." Said the Judge as he slammed his gavel.
Court began to begin again. All took their proper seats. The security guard was called into the courtroom to take the stand. "Witness, please testify about what you saw that day." Said the Judge. "Yes your Honor." Said Dan. "I was on duty at that guard station that day. I was there at the time of the crime. Around ten-thirty Nathan came in there. We talked for a few minutes. He went to do his duties afterwards. He came back in around eleven. He said it was cold, and wanted to know if he could borrow my jacket." ". . .That certainly changes things up." Said the Judge in astonishment. "Defense, you may begin your cross-examination."
"So," Began Jurist. "He came back in around eleven?" "Yeah. What about it?" Confirmed and Asked Dan. "Your Honor," Began Jurist as he slammed his palm on his desk. "This changes everything." "How so Mr. Bulwark? Care to explain?" Asked the Judge. "Yes." Said Jurist. "If he went back into the security room at eleven, then who did Mrs. Hark see at eleven? She said it was eleven on the dot." "Witness!" Shouted Vira. "How long did it take for The Mr. Hobbs to obtain your jacket?" "It took around a minute." Said Dan. "Well, there it is." Began Vira. "Around a minute. He could have taken the jacket and ran." "Objection." Said Jurist. " "A question I have in all of this is, 'Who turned off the camera'?" "What do you mean Mr. Bulwark?" Asked the Judge. "What I mean is. . ." Began Jurist. "This witness gave no report about the security camera switching off." "Witness! This is very important information. Tell us who switched off the camera." Said the Judge. "Alright." Said Dan.
"Well, It's hard to explain. . ." Began Dan. "You had better find a way to explain it witness." Threatened the Judge. "Alright. It was. . . A virus." Said Dan. "A virus?" The courtroom asked in unison. "Yeah. A computer virus. Someone hacked into the system around ten-thirty. It took thirty minutes to fix." Elaborated Dan. The courtroom was filled with silence, which was filled with silent beings of silentness. After a five minute pause, someone could finally find the words to say. ". . .O-Objection!" Shouted Vira. "This is indeed a valuable witness. However, this does not tell us who the true killer was! There is still the possibility that it was the Defendant!" "What possibility is there?" Asks Jurist. "The case makes sense now." "How so Mr. Bulwark?" Asks Vira. "Let us review." Began Jurist. "The victim was already there at the Defendant's arrival. We know that from the recording. We also know that he went into the security building. Mr. Renalds' testimony confirms that. He left a few minutes later and did his job as normal. He went into the building around eleven. This could mean anything. Ten-fifty, Ten-fifty-seven, eleven on the dot. . . Who was it that called the authorities?" "It was. . . Oh my! It was indeed the Defendant!" Said the Judge, astonished. "This case is about finished." Claimed Jurist.
"Now, to continue. In order for all of this to fit with the facts, the Defendant would have had to go into the building at a minute or so before eleven o' clock. And as we saw in the video he walked out, and upon seeing the scene he ran! This was to contact the authorities!" "OBJECTION!" Shouted Vira. "Then who is the killer? The Defendant was the only one in that area besides the victim at that time!" "Well," Began Jurist. "It would have to be someone who could have gotten there in under a minute. The entire killing process would have to take less than a minute. There is only one logical explanation." "And what is that Mr. Bulwark?" Asks the Judge, confused. "I've always thought the bars were a tad too wide in those animal cages. The victim obviously fell partway into the cage, only to get stomped. . . By a giraffe!" "What. . ." "The. . ." "Crabcakes?" Said Vira, the Judge, and someone not important.
"Objection!" Said Vira. "Who would be stupid enough to fall into a cage like that?" "Someone who was really into what they were seeing! She was there for a half-hour. Looking at the giraffes! She must really like them. She probably leaned in to get a closer look and. . ." Explained Jurist. "Objection!" Said Vira. "That's. . . Objectionable!" "Objection overruled." Said the Judge. "This does sound like a plausible theory. However, how did she end up in front of the cages then? Wouldn't she still be in the cage?" "Once again your honor, the bars." Began Jurist. "One doesn't just die instantly from being stepped on you know. It takes at least a few seconds. . ." "You're saying. . ." Began the Judge. "This is ludicrous! I refuse to believe this theory!" Said Vira. "It's the only one that makes sense now!" Shouted Jurist. "I'm afraid. . . I have to agree with the Defense on this. I think it is now time for my verdict." Said the Judge. "N-. . . No!" Said Vira, softly. "I declare the Defendant, Mr. Nathan Hobbs. . . Not Guilty." The Judge said as he slammed his gavel. Confetti rained down from who knows where. . . "Court is adjourned." Said the Judge.
The screen fades out. The following words appear on the screen:
